How We Model Aircraft Enthusiasts Emulate Our Aviation Pioneers

More than 10 years ago, Fritz Weber and Rainer Mattle built a full-scale replica of the Blériot XI, the aircraft in which Oskar Bider made his first flight across the Alps.

Converted construction plan

To do this, he used an existing blueprint, which he then scaled to a ratio of 1:2.5. The aircraft has been flown at various model aircraft events in the past, including the MG Bassersdorf Air Show on August 31, 2008.

Oskar Bider is revered

Fritz Weber still looks up to Oskar Bider as his great aviation idol. That’s why he’s been looking forward to the “100 Years of Alpine Flight” anniversary for quite some time. He will certainly be attending the Oskar Bider Festival on June 22–23, 2013, in Langenbruck. There, he plans to show his two Blériot models to interested spectators. The large model (scale 1:2.5) will be on display, and the smaller model (scale 1:4) will be in the air. ■
