RC Sailplane Aerobatics in Balzers
The aviation enthusiasts of the Falknis Model Flying Club proved themselves to be extremely competent organizers to their colleagues from the Northeast Switzerland Model Flying Region as well as to guests from the neighboring Central Switzerland region.
Leading the way was Silvio Meier, who had been working on organizing the glider aerobatics competition for several months and had been driving the planning forward intensively with his colleagues at the Falknis Model Flying Group. The Falknis Model Flying Group’s facility and surrounding infrastructure are quite impressive: beautifully and idyllically laid out. It feels inviting and friendly. We all felt right at home immediately. The weather played its part,
as the sunshine was absolutely beautiful.
Some of the pilots certainly cast skeptical glances at the walnut tree right in the middle of the approach path. The relatively short, sloping grass runway also raised some skepticism. The towering rock face on the opposite side of the airfield left a lasting impression—one that is surely unique. Every airfield has its own challenges and special characteristics. It’s exciting to fly at unfamiliar airfields and get to know the conditions. That always promises excitement and thrills. The competition began without any notable incidents; the first pilots demonstrated their skills with graceful—

They performed the required figures, with elegant descents and beautiful, skillful landings. After the first three rounds, the regional winners had not yet been determined—with the exception of guest participant Tim Schärer, who already had three scores in the thousands to his credit. The scores kept the tension high. The fourth and final round determined the winner of the Eastern Region. The participants from the Northeastern Switzerland region, as well as the guest competitors, then had to complete the freestyle program. The freestyle program—a spectacular show accompanied by sound and smoke—consisted of graceful maneuvers and thrilled both spectators and competitors.
The tow pilots, Thomas Bruggisser and Peter Kurz, worked tirelessly to fulfill the glider pilots’ requests. They deserve our recognition. Thank you very much. The event was very well received and met with great satisfaction in the Eastern Region. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers at MG Falknis.
