Thoughts on Model Aviation
(Excerpt from an editorial by Bob Hunt in *Model Aviation*, Dec. 2007, trans. R. Berger)
A look at the model aviation community reveals that it has myriad special-interest groups, each focused on a specific type of model aircraft. At first glance, it might seem as though we are separate and divided, with no connections to one another, simply somehow related through the same “parent organization.” What this really shows is that model aviation has grown and outgrown its origins. The original, simple model flying of yesterday has paved the way for extraordinary technical and otherwise astonishing achievements—in every direction. Models have become both larger and smaller than ever before. They fly faster and slower than ever before. They are simpler and more
complex than ever before. Yes, it’s fascinating to be involved in model aviation.
It all began, however, with a budding interest in the hobby or a search for a pastime. And that spark was likely ignited by an encounter with a model aviator at some point, somewhere along the timeline. This goes all the way back to the very beginnings of the hobby/sport. This is now the point to which we should direct our attention.
Some of our disciplines have become so complex that they demand all our attention, energy, and free time. This leaves hardly any time or energy left to pursue the long-term preservation of our passion. Perhaps it’s time to give a little back by remembering where we came from and realizing that others are just waiting—
to get involved, just as we once did. They need our guidance and sound advice, just as we did when we accepted the advice and help offered by those who got us started. A “win-win scenario.” But now, how can we do something that helps others while still leaving us enough time for our own interests? There are those who find joy in passing on their experiences. Let’s keep this in mind. They’re happy to offer help and find fulfillment in doing so. On the other hand, for many of us, it’s simply not possible to take on a teaching role. Don’t feel guilty. Life is short, and there’s no need to apologize for trying to find something that brings you joy and satisfaction amid the cold, harsh reality of making ends meet.
I think that when we take advantage of good opportunities to talk about our hobby with those around us, post photos on bulletin boards, put club stickers on our cars, and show people where and how to get into model flying and find model flying supplies, we’ve
way have sown some seeds. All of this requires hardly any extra time and doesn’t detract from our other interests.
I (Bob Hunt) [He’s a good guitarist and singer. Note by R. Berger] am a big fan of well-written music and lyrics, and one of my long-time favorites is Jackson Browne. Among many other things, he composed a song titled “For A Dancer.” What he sings is, in essence, the sum of what I’ve always wanted to say. You can substitute the word “model aviator” for “dancer” in the following verses.

I, René Berger, read this editorial in *Model Aviation* and would like to share Bob Hunt’s thoughts with us Swiss model aviators through this translation. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me discover, develop, and enjoy this diverse hobby.

“You’ve grown into a dance, from a seed that someone scattered.
Keep going and scatter your own. And somewhere between the time you arrived and the time you leave, there lies a reason buried for why you live, but you’ll never know it.”
