A Report from Someone Who Was There

After a hiatus of more than two years due to the coronavirus pandemic, this was the first major international event. The Swiss national team included three senior competitors and one junior. Sixteen-year-old Alain Schad from Mühlau, a member of the Affoltern a. Albis Model Flying Club (MGAF), was the only Swiss junior to represent the SMV at the event.

To prepare as well as possible for the European Championship, the team also competed in the Tisza Cup. The event took place on Friday and Saturday, giving the team a chance to acclimate to the surroundings and weather conditions. Temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius took their toll on everyone. Alain Schad was the top Swiss finisher, placing 50th out of 112 pilots and ranking as the ninth-best junior in the overall standings (juniors and seniors were scored together according to FAI World Cup rules).

On Monday, Alain had to take to the air under very difficult conditions. Unfortunately, he made an out-of-field landing during one flight and thus lost valuable points. At the end of the day, he took the results in stride and showed no disappointment. The competition continues through Friday. In the days that followed, Alain posted strong results and steadily climbed the rankings to 14th place.

A spot in the top 10 had become out of reach, but giving up was never an option. Alain ultimately placed 14th out of 24 junior competitors. In the team standings, Alain placed 8th out of 12 teams. The young model aircraft pilot was able to keep pace with Europe’s best juniors. Satisfied with his performance and having achieved his goal of finishing in the middle of the pack, he began his journey home with a wealth of new experiences. We wish the young model aircraft pilot continued success.
