6th Building Night at the Acro Model Club in Geneva
For the sixth year in a row, on July 6 and 7, novice and experienced model builders gathered in the Geneva countryside at the AMC field in Malval. With mixed weather—ranging from sunshine to showers—the participants armed themselves with courage, jackets, and drinks to tackle the long hours of the event.
In short, 18 hours—or about 1,100 minutes—to build an airplane from scratch based on a different theme each year, which is announced a few months before the famous night.
Overnight, the group's campsite and cabin fill with a friendly atmosphere—though with a hint of competition. Naturally, pre-built structures or advance preparations are not allowed.
After several editions focused on the race around the pylons, the longest flight, and the maximum payload, 2012 marks the start of the balloon hunt. The AMC can only accept a limited number of pilots (due to space and infrastructure constraints!). Each competitor will put their skills in rapid construction and their ability to work under pressure to the test against the 16 other contestants. In groups of three competitors, the aircraft they build must strike and burst a helium-filled balloon after it takes flight. To limit the size and weight of the aircraft, the propeller diameter was not to exceed 9"; the rules seem straightforward!
Early tests quickly showed that the exercise was proving to be much more complicated than expected. The wind added to the difficulty; the balloon's trajectory was erratic, and it veered off course quickly.

After a long night of building and a short night’s sleep for some, 17 of the 18 registered competitors showed up with an airplane ready for takeoff. Four balloons were launched simultaneously to increase the volume of air. In the first round, out of all the pilots, only one managed to perform the “chassé” maneuver and, by some unlikely twist of fate, caused all four balloons to burst. Thus, the 2012 championship went to Gil, who had also won the first three editions. Given the difficulty, the balloons were ultimately tethered to the ground with several dozen meters of string. The second round took place simultaneously for all planes. You can imagine the visual spectacle of about fifteen airplanes circling around four balloons. It was an unforgettable moment for all participants and visitors on Sunday. Congratulations to Patrik and Stéphane for taking second and third place, respectively.

Once again, this unique concept showcases the creativity of the pilots and has been a huge hit with a wide range of modelers. I’d like to highlight the presence of members from GAM Geneva and GAM Romont: thank you for coming!

The AMC is pleased to invite you to take on the challenge of the 2013 edition and perhaps take the trophy away from the founding club. More photos are available now, and further information about the next edition can be found at www.amc-geneve.ch
