The Model Aircraft Veteran

After I retired, I turned my attention to “slow-flyers.” When you’re over 70, your hands start to shake while you’re working on projects, your workspace needs better lighting, tiny screws fly away and can’t be found anymore...

But if the joy of flying doesn’t fade, the airfield is far away, and standing
for long periods and looking up become a struggle—then it’s time for a change, at the very latest. I’ve always preferred building my own model airplanes (small and light). That way, it’s easy to achieve realistic flight speeds—provided the wind is light. My requirements: electric motor propulsion—takeoff and landing from the patio or front yard. After

sifting through my archive of construction plans, I came across the plans for the Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter. Wingspan 80 cm, controlled by ailerons. My decision was made: same wingspan, but without ailerons, built from “Depalon.” Easy access to the electronics—large wheels (ground takeoff)—open doors—no upper skin. The designation “Experimental”

justifies this variation. After completing my PC-6, I was surprised by how appealing the result was.

The little plane has already completed its maiden flight and a second test flight, filling me with joy. At 78 years old, I’m proud to still be able to fly and control this small, homemade PC-6 myself.
