Letter to the Editor

In my letter to the editor, which was published in MFS 3/2021, I forgot to mention that it refers to the article “EU Drone Regulations—An Attack on Model Aircraft Pilots” in MFS 2/2021.

Then I thought about how this issue could be categorized. Here’s my suggestion:

Classification of Unmanned Aircraft

1. Drones

Aircraft that operate fully or partially autonomously and are not remotely controlled within visual line of sight or are free-flying.

1.1

For example, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and multicopters, airships, balloons, rockets, parachutes, paragliders, and hang gliders, etc.

1.2

Free-flying drones, such as weather balloons or weather rockets, which are designed to fly beyond visual range.

2. Model Aircraft

Aircraft operated by remote control within visual line of sight or flying freely within visual range. Weighing less than 25 kg, unless an exemption has been granted, as before.

2.1

For example, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and multicopters, airships, balloons, rockets, parachutes, paragliders, and hang gliders, etc.

2.2

Free-flight model aircraft that should remain within visual range.

When it comes to copters, the terminology isn’t quite 100% accurate, because “heli” means something like “propeller” or “winding,” and “copter” means “wing.” That’s why

I suggest using the existing terms “helicopter” and “multicopter” instead of “monocopter” and “multicopter.” ■
