ALMOST A SHIP'S CHRISTENING

Twin Otter ARF models are popular at our airfields. Until now, I was mainly familiar with the version with a wingspan of just under 1.5 m. I’ve never come across the even smaller one with a wingspan of about 60 cm. The 1.5-meter model is also available with floats. However, water takeoffs and landings are only recommended in very calm conditions. The 1.8-meter version (HEBU) would certainly be better suited.

I was intrigued by the news that Gerd Vollenweider had managed to acquire a truly impressive Twin Otter complete with floats. It is the Twin Otter 80E model from FLEX Innovations. These models are imported by modellmarkt24.

The model takes off quickly and flies smoothly. Gerd is thrilled. He followed the instructions and hardly had to adjust the trim at all. Even when (unfortunately) one motor failed, the proud bird was able to land on the water without any problems. Thus, even this scenario—which isn’t very popular for multi-engine models—was played out unplanned. The maiden flight was celebrated at a cozy garden restaurant. After all, that much water makes you thirsty.
