MG Gossau Fall Break Fun for Students During Fall Break

On October 17, the Gossau ZH Model Aircraft Club hosted a fall break activity for students ages 8 to 14.

The “Quicker” glider, provided by NOS and manufactured by Aero-Naut, was used for the event; it is ideally suited for this purpose. Since the MG Gossau does not have its own clubhouse, the well-equipped and easily accessible Pfadhaus was rented for the occasion.

At 9:00 a.m. sharp, seven children were welcomed. Everyone was excited about the day’s program.

After a brief round of introductions by the MG Gossau members present—who were there to supervise—the session began with a short theory segment. Why does an airplane fly? When did the first model airplane fly? Control functions and other topics were explained. The children’s interest and prior knowledge were delightfully high.

After this entertaining introduction, construction could begin. All participants worked intently and more or less quietly on their models. Shortly before noon, interrupted by a brief snack break, almost all models were structurally complete, so the lunch break could be used to let the glue dry.

After lunch—grilled sausages, various homemade salads, chips, bread, and drinks—it was time to weigh and decorate the dried models. The children let their imaginations run wild, resulting in seven uniquely designed models.

The part of the day that had been eagerly and excitedly anticipated was now upon us. Would all the models fly?

You bet! After a few trim adjustments and practice throws, all the models flew absolutely superbly. Not a single model broke until the end of the event.

To give the participating children a closer look at our wonderful hobby, everyone had the chance to fly an EasyStar and an EasyGlider with the help of teachers and students. This opportunity was eagerly taken up, and most children flew them multiple times. Several members of MG Gossau had brought their own models and were able to provide insight into the possibilities. For example, a glider was launched using a rubber band launcher, which amazed the children because of the spectacular takeoff. An F5J model was also demonstrated, though this was less spectacular due to its low speed.

Starting at 3:00 p.m., parents were invited to marvel at the day’s results and pick up their children.

The children proudly showed their parents the models they had built and demonstrated their flying skills using the instructor/student transmitter.

An all-around successful day, with satisfied participants and somewhat tired organizers, came to a successful close around 4:00 p.m.
