"Cup Suisse" Friendly Flying Event for Gliders

On Saturday afternoon, June 18, 1977, the 5th Cup Suisse was held at the Allmend in Frauenfeld. The glider-launch category, launched by MFS in 1973, seems to have finally established itself as a full-fledged model flying discipline. A new participation record was set with 35 juniors and seniors. The goal of the organizer, F. Tapernoux, is to exceed the 50-participant mark.

If you follow the example of the MG Furttal, this will soon be the case. Instead of their monthly group get-together, they organized a glider-building evening; after all, with the necessary preparations (templates), such a model can be built in three hours. Sixteen hobbyists took part that evening.

As for the competition: The weather was sunny but windy at first. Trimming and flight adjustments were the order of the day. The “Swee-pette” model was the most common, followed by the “Salome.” After the first five rounds, a violent thunderstorm struck, and the event had to be suspended for an hour and a half. Afterward, everyone had until 6:00 p.m. to complete their 15 flights. Swiss indoor flying specialist René Butty once again demonstrated his great skill this year. He won with a 51-second lead over Dieter Siebenmann. The top junior was the well-known Rudolf Menzi, with an average of 43.3 seconds.

In the evening, there was an impressive demonstration of vintage scale models powered by CO2 engines. Even the ground launches went off without a hitch. Flight times ranged from 23 to 30 seconds. Model weights were up to about 60 grams.

For the awards ceremony, everyone gathered at the MG Frauenfeld clubhouse—a real little pub.

Thanks are due to the organizer, MG Affoltern, as well as all the disciplined participants.
