1971 Friendly Competition for Motor Gliders in Affoltern a. A.

von Peter Meier
2

The MG Affoltern a. A. held its motor glider competition as a sort of test event. Twenty model airplane enthusiasts from eight groups turned out for the event.

At first, the weather didn’t look very promising, since it had rained just three hours before the competition began. But thanks to the strong wind (wind speeds of up to 10–12 m/sec), the skies soon cleared. It was also the strong wind that caused problems for some of the competitors. As a result, some models drifted off course early on outside the landing area, and their landing bonus went down the drain—or rather, into the grass!

Despite these difficult conditions, there were only a few crashes, and not a single plane got stuck in the forest behind the airfield. So it was no surprise that the mood among the participants remained upbeat throughout. With the accompanying photos, we’d like to briefly relive this competition. Many thanks to MG Diessenhofen’s official photographer, Felix Maier—all the photos were taken by him.
