Seven flight maneuvers, with a fly-through at an altitude of less than 1.5 meters between each one, followed by a precision landing. That, in a nutshell, is the program for a Styro-Cup. The aircraft used are simple Styrofoam motor gliders with a maximum wingspan of three meters. And to keep things modest, the aircraft must not have a list price exceeding CHF 350.

The 13 pilots who were drawn to Büron, near Lucerne, this Saturday were all top-notch. No sooner had the IG Mooshof set up its tent than the pilots who didn’t want to leave anything to chance arrived. Everything was there, from their own tents to battery charging stations with solar panels. After everyone had stocked up on hot coffee, the daily briefing began. For 2022, the Swiss Akro Connection had streamlined the competition schedule once again. This allows an entire event to be managed on a single score sheet per pilot, and the scoring office operates independently of electricity and the internet.

Three rounds were flown in the morning, followed by two after lunch. The ability to discard one result significantly improved the pilots’ chances. Not everything went smoothly that Saturday morning. Temperatures remained pleasant, though there were repeated light showers, which didn’t deter most pilots. Time and again, there were spectacular flights, especially with a stunt performed on the nearby silo belonging to the landowner. But with the right adhesive

This gap was also "filled." People got together over sausages, veggie burgers, beer, plenty of mineral water, cake, and coffee

in the club tent’s “Schärmen” area, chatting about flying, model building, and the weather. As always, there was a relaxed, friendly atmosphere—one that makes coming to Bürün well worth the trip. After the award ceremony, conducted by René Koblet of Swiss Akro Connection, everyone quickly headed for their cars to escape another downpour in time. A huge thank you to everyone: to all the pilots for participating, to René Koblet for the smooth organization and the prizes, and to the IG

Mooshof for setting up and taking down the infrastructure. Goodbye, and see you again in 2023 in Bürün!
