Visit RC Italy Hely-Team

The helicopter—which even Leonardo da Vinci had pondered—made its debut in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a technically sophisticated aircraft. Consequently, it was only natural that model aircraft builders would take an interest in it. Today, it is no longer difficult to build technically advanced “helicopters” that are in no way inferior to their real-life counterparts.

It was last June when a “helicopter club”—RC Italy Heli-Team—from Italy paid us a weekend visit at our airfield in Stabio.

Their models—which were quite large and came in a wide variety of designs—featured a level of detail that could easily stand up to comparison with the originals.

In addition to rivets, markings, pilots, and so on, the mechanics of the rotor drive are truly impressive—functioning just as precisely as its big brother. It’s just small—a marvel.

Technical discussions among the pilots were, of course, the order of the day; terms like torque, power, construction materials, remote control, and so on were thrown around—all of which must have been incomprehensible to the layperson. The pilots’ flying skills were nothing to sneeze at—a true spectacle that had to be seen to be believed.

Here’s a brief glimpse of a successful weekend, made possible by fantastic performances, excellent organization, a buffet, and the local club’s catering. The grand finale was a performance by the PC-7 aerobatics squadron, which was, of course, just as captivating.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making this model flying event a success.
