Bern Region, Oberland: Summer Breeze Recreational Flying
On May 28, 2006, Max Germann, the “father” of the Sommerwind, invited all owners of a Sommerwind model to the 2nd “Sommerwind Fun Fly-In” at Diemtigbergli.
Despite the less-than-ideal weather forecast, numerous pilots and owners of the Sommerwind still showed up. This was likely also due to the fact that this robust model is available in an electric version, which can be flown even in strong and stormy winds. However, the weather gods were kinder to us all than predicted, and fortunately, the rain stayed away until around evening.
In addition to the joy of getting together with like-minded people, the “casual flying” event was once again topped off with culinary delights. The grill master, Kurt Hodler, treated us to perfectly grilled steaks, and the wonderful kitchen fairy, Hildi Germann, spoiled us with delicious potato salad and a fine bottle from the cellar. A voluntary precision-landing competition was held, and the top finishers were rewarded with an
engraved glass plate from C-Design, crafted by Bernard Chappatte, who is also the proud owner of a Sommerwind model.
The final standings were as follows:
- 1st place = Martin Hohl**
- 2nd place = Ruedi Steinle**
- 3rd place = Guido Baumann**
Another highlight was the raffle for a “Sommerwind” glider model.
All in all, it was an event where, in the end, there were really only winners. Even the glider that had landed in the highest fir tree canopy was recovered unscathed thanks to the intrepid efforts of participant Heinrich Aeberhard.
In the end, everyone agreed once again: What more could you ask for in life than a beautiful hillside like the one at the Wimmis Model Flying Club on Diemtigbergli, a good steak with potato salad, the peaceful company of like-minded people, and, of course, a “Sommerwind” model by Max Germann.

The third meeting is planned for next year. Anyone who would like to attend can contact Max Germann, the creator of “Sommerwind,” at R.M. Modellbau
Reichenbach, Alte Strasse, 3713 Reichenbach, is happy to provide advice and assistance.
