OFAC Model Aircraft Certification Day

4

By decision of the French-speaking Switzerland general assembly of AéRO, it was decided to consolidate the Federal Office of Civil Aviation’s certification process for scale models weighing more than 30 kg into a single day. This event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at the Yverdon airfield and is intended for modelers in the Romandy region.

Travel expenses for OFAC experts will be covered by the AéRO region

Pilots must submit a certification application to the OFAC using the official application form for models weighing more than 30 kg. The link below provides additional information:

An opportunity to admire some truly exceptional models

Model certification requires significant investment and logistical effort. In the past, each modeler had to apply for individual certification and bring all the necessary testing equipment with them. To illustrate this process: each certification previously required, for example, the creation of heavy and bulky test loads, which can now be pooled and reused for load testing on every model. This reduces the number of trips experts need to make to a single trip, benefiting every modeler involved.

We can therefore expect to see some exceptional models and experience a unique atmosphere, as it’s not always easy to imagine the process required to authorize the flight of large models, as well as the safety measures needed to conduct flight demonstrations—sometimes in front of a large audience.

The day’s schedule and flight order will not be announced until the last minute; therefore, any additional information regarding the day’s organization or the certification flight times may be requested from Phil Szymanski, who is in charge of the event.
