Brislach Model Exchange Continues Its Success Story
The pandemic has thrown quite a few aspects of our daily lives off balance—including the schedule for the Brislach Model Aircraft Exchange. After it had been canceled twice, there was a lot of anxiety about whether model airplane enthusiasts from near and far would find their way back to Brislach. On top of that, the weather on April 2 was absolutely dreadful. And yet—they came in droves.
After two “COVID-related cancellations,” the Brislach Model Flying Club was able to organize its 20th model-making fair on the first weekend in April. The challenges were significant even in the run-up to the event. Among other things, it was necessary to provide enough parking spaces. Thanks to the support of the municipality, this was handled perfectly. As early as 7 a.m., the first buyers and sellers were already lining up in front of the multipurpose hall, even though the fair didn’t open its doors until 8 a.m. But then it was time to get started! Flight-ready gliders, motorized airplanes, helicopters, as well as model kits, electric motors, remote controls, and much more were eagerly carried into the hall and displayed in the most eye-catching way possible. The most attractive and affordable items quickly found buyers and were carried out of the hall before those who arrived a bit late had even had a chance to display their wares.
Previous model fairs had already shown that ready-made models made of Elapor—a type of Styrofoam—are very popular. This trend has only grown stronger since then. The market for these “foam models” has grown significantly, and the selection of classic gliders, gliders with auxiliary electric motors, and purely electric models has become enormous. Model airplanes with internal combustion engines have—with the exception of tow planes—almost disappeared from the market. But here, too, a turnaround is on the horizon thanks to increasingly powerful batteries and propulsion systems.
But those who visit the Brislach Model Exchange don’t come just to trade. The exchange is also a popular gathering place for the large community of model aviators from all over Switzerland. It’s a place to make new connections, nurture friendships, and reminisce about the past. And last but not least: What would the fair be without its famously good food! That’s why many visitors’ motto is: Even if I don’t buy or sell anything, at least I’ve enjoyed a good meal and spent a wonderful day among like-minded people. With that in mind, another successful fair, attended by around 250 visitors, came to a close in the late afternoon.
