David or Goliath?

Dear Reader,

In this issue, we’re featuring a trend in model aircraft that captivates our hearts as model airplane enthusiasts. Once you’ve caught this bug, it never lets you go. There are virtually no limits to creativity with these models; it’s often just a few small steps from an idea to a flying model. The costs for such projects are manageable, but the time required and the level of craftsmanship needed should not be underestimated.

Given the current trend toward large, expensive, and fast model aircraft, these small, homemade models deserve more attention.

Unfortunately, such models are rarely seen at air shows in Switzerland, which is a mystery to me personally. I’d like to make one exception here, though: At the Huttwil Homebuilt Model Airplane Meet, these model airplanes are given a fitting showcase, where you can marvel at these “works of art” both on the ground and in the air.

In the story, little David defeats Goliath; in the reality of model aviation, Goliath is more likely to prevail, even if our sympathies lie with little David.

Who knows—perhaps in the future, pilots flying smaller model airplanes will once again receive more attention at model aviation events; they certainly deserve it.
