Heiner Borer on the History of the Schwalbennest Tethered Flight Center

The idea to build a tethered flight runway came about after three members of the MG Breitenbach (Guido Giger, Kurt Schwab, and Heiner Borer) attended a tethered flight competition in Salzburg in 1968. Construction began in 1969. The land was leased on a long-term basis from an elderly lady from Büsserach. The municipality granted a building permit with the canton’s (SO) approval, even though the area is located within the Jura Protection Zone! Virtually all of the work—with the exception of the asphalting—was carried out by the members themselves.

Since 1973, the International Jura Cup has been held every two years. This competition has since become one of the traditional FAI World Cup events. In 1979, the clubhouse was also built by the members themselves. In 1999, the property (70 ares) was purchased, and in 2001, the runway was completely renovated. The canton of Solothurn (SO) supported the construction with a substantial grant from the lottery fund. To date, there have been no difficulties whatsoever with authorities or nature and environmental organizations.
