Rookie Project

Encouraging children and introducing them to the world of aviation and science leads to interesting projects, such as the Rookie project.

The main person behind the project is Vincent Merlijn, but the entire CIAM Education (FAI International Committee on Model Aviation) has been involved in the work. It was launched in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Aviation Association.

This project provides teachers with topics they can explore with their students: math, science, languages...

In a workshop, a child as young as 8, with guidance from a knowledgeable instructor, can build a small motorized free-flight model and fly it indoors or outdoors. This provides a fun introduction to the world of air sports.

The model

The Rookie is a small (280 mm wingspan) motorized glider that can be built in an hour. It

is designed to be very durable thanks to its lightweight, foam construction. It is unique in that it is powered by a fixed-propeller motor driven by a capacitor.

The kit comes complete with a charger and numerous step-by-step assembly illustrations. Instructions are available for both children and supervisors. There’s even an animated assembly video that’s a must-see at: The Rookie Glider Build. Stop-motion video—YouTube.

The Flight

The model is a calm-wind plane. A charger is included to recharge the capacitor in 1 to 2 seconds for 30 seconds of motor run (and that's

(long free flight!). The charge time will determine the flight time, but be careful—don’t overlook the initial adjustments, which will be made using a minimum amount of flight time. An unobstructed environment is required, along with all safety instructions to prevent accidents.

Competition

The Rookie project also includes an online competition in which children can pilot any

model that complies with the competition rules. Duck-tail and flying-wing designs, for example, are prohibited!

Conclusion

The Swiss Aero Club took an interest in the project and was even planning to feature its logo on airplanes. The price is intended to be attractive and is not meant to generate profits, but rather to encourage young people. Finally, an interesting gift for this Christmas season! ■
