Is flying in formation a step backward in model aviation?

Dear Reader,

In this issue’s cover story, we present a model of an Alpha Jet that was built using a 3D printer. New, modern technologies are making their way into the model aviation scene. We’re grateful for these tools, which are becoming increasingly common. At the 20th Homebuilt Model Airplane Meet in Huttwil, traditional model builders still outnumber the rest, even though new techniques and materials are being used more frequently.

But why are there so few new and young modelers and pilots at such gatherings?

It starts with our clubs—we need to be willing to involve young people and encourage them.

If we fail to draw young people’s attention to model flying, to encourage them, and to pass on our knowledge and skills, then our hobby will continue to be pushed to the margins. In the future, clubs will lack members who, for example, can also take on board duties.

Furthermore, there is reason to fear that, not least because of this, more model-making specialty retailers will struggle in the future. We’ve already lost many specialty retailers in recent years; let’s take care of the ones we still have. Let’s forget the idea that “stinginess is cool.”

Summer vacation is the time for “vacation passes,” which allow children to take advantage of a wide range of recreational activities. Let’s seize this

opportunity to passionately share the fascination of our hobby with interested young people—the children will thank us for it.

Let’s compare the issue of promoting the next generation to sports like soccer or skiing, where young talent is specifically nurtured, whether by clubs or by associations.

However, there are certainly regions that support young talent in model flying, where building courses and training sessions are offered. But is that enough? Does model flying lack a comprehensive strategy for promoting young talent?

The editorial team hopes you enjoy this issue of MFS.
