Scale Helicopter Meet MG Liechtenstein in Benden

Just under 30 pilots, with even more scale helicopters, made their way to the MG Liechtenstein, which organized this event. Everything was perfectly organized on an enviable infrastructure, which was built primarily through the volunteer efforts of the MG Liechtenstein members.

It was also amazing to see all the exquisite “gems” that the pilots from Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland brought to the field. It was a true journey through time, whether it was the helicopters from different eras or their propulsion systems, which visitors could experience up close. On display were models ranging from beginner-level kits to full-scale helicopters—from models designed purely as cargo helicopters to police, rescue, and firefighting helicopters. Of course, combat and passenger helicopters were also on display. The numerous spectators were invited to take a closer look at the models. A clever move, as it sparked numerous interesting discussions and a lively exchange of expertise.

This special helicopter was designed and built in the U.S. in the early 1980s specifically for the action film “Blue Thunder” (German title: “Das Fliegende Auge”). In the film, the “Blue Thunder” is a high-tech weapon capable of picking up faint sounds over long distances using directional microphones, detecting people through walls with a thermal imaging camera, and flying almost silently thanks to a “whisper mode.” It was also equipped with a six-barrel 20-millimeter Gatling gun, which was used to fight crime in the Los Angeles area. The film “Das Fliegende Auge” was released in theaters in 1983 and won several awards. *MN*
