On August 17, it was that time of year again at the Fehraltorf airfield. Amid very pleasant late-summer weather, the two-day air show—which the club had been preparing for quite some time—kicked off that weekend.

■ Reaching out to local authorities helps foster understanding of model aviation

The airfield is located on the edge of the industrial area within the agricultural zone. It is thus ideally situated, as it is relatively far from residential areas. The club is committed to maintaining good relations with the local community and thereby fostering acceptance. It also maintains contact with local authorities. The VIP reception held on Saturday morning, which was specially organized for this purpose, provided a good opportunity to do so.

■ A two-day air show for families and neighbors

The field’s location on the outskirts of town made it ideal for a visit by bike or even on foot. This gave the children a chance to get some extra exercise, and at the field they enjoyed a variety of activities with their parents. Although billed as an aerial battle, three Funcub foam models took off, each towing a balloon. The challenging task was to use the propeller to pop the opponent’s balloon and then escape as unharmed as possible. This didn’t quite go according to plan. However, the actual action in the air generated even more excitement than some spectators had expected.

■ Thrills at the 3D Helicopter Show

The speaker advised against attempting to replicate these flight maneuvers. First, the bright green-and-yellow helicopter hovered just a few centimeters above the runway in an inverted flight. It then moved into the so-called “lawnmower” maneuver toward the adjacent green area. However, thanks to careful maintenance, the grass had already been cut so short that hardly any blades were blown away. Fortunately for the spectators, there were still tall cornstalks with flowers at the top right next to it. Now the rotor blades finally got to do what they were meant to do. And soon, much to the delight of the audience, pieces of flower buds were flying through the air.

■ Glider aerobatics in the sky with pink smoke trails

Martin Geelhaar of the MGFH created beautiful contrails in the blue summer sky with his Swift S1 and waved cheerfully to the spectators while flying in a deep inverted flight.
