21st Brislach Model Exchange – Soon to Be One of a Kind in All of Switzerland

A quarter of a century ago, countless model-building fairs in Switzerland were extremely popular. With the growing prevalence of the Internet and the convenience of online shopping, many of these markets have since disappeared. One of the few that has not only survived this turbulent period but has actually grown in popularity is the Brislach Model-Building Exchange.

On Saturday, April 1, 2023, it was that time again. Early in the morning—the day had barely begun—both those who had items to sell and prospective buyers eager to make a purchase were already lining up outside the multipurpose hall. Within no time at all, a substantial number of tables were filled with gliders, powered aircraft, helicopters, electric motors, remote controls, and much more. Since the hall’s floor space ultimately couldn’t handle the rush and the weather didn’t allow for additional exhibits to be placed outdoors, the basement had to be brought in on the spot. Before long, this extra space was also filled. Even before everything could be presented to the public, the rush for the best items had already begun. The first bargain hunters were already carrying their newly acquired treasures out of the hall when the sellers, who had arrived somewhat late, began displaying their items.

Whether they had sold their wares or secured a bargain, visitors were drawn—following the delicious aromas—to the small but delightful food stand. The morning’s rush in the hall was followed around noon by a similar rush for the culinary delights. There was hardly a visitor who didn’t treat themselves to a delicious steak or a bratwurst from the grill.

However, the Brislach Model Aircraft Exchange is not just a marketplace for model aircraft enthusiasts. People also gather in Brislach to exchange ideas with like-minded individuals, to talk shop, and to reunite annually with colleagues and friends from all over Switzerland. Some are even said to have made the two-hour trip. This fact alone is proof that our fair is well-known and popular far beyond the region.

In the afternoon, the crowds in the hall gradually thinned out. Satisfied visitors left Brislach, likely already thinking about the next fair. The satisfaction of our visitors and the renewed success of this year’s fair give us confidence that we will hold this event again in the spring of 2024. ■
