"RC Freestyle" Development Program at SMV

RC freestyle demonstrations are a recent trend in RC aerobatics. Unlike aerobatic routines—which tend to seem rather monotonous to outside spectators, whether performed by fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters—freestyle flights are exciting and full of surprises. The musical accompaniment adds an extra emotional dimension to the show.

Modest entry lists—a draw for spectators

Freestyle flying presents pilots with a highly demanding technical challenge as well as a creative and artistic one. The amount of training required should not be underestimated. This is likely to limit the number of participants compared to traditional aerobatics disciplines. The benefit for us model aviators lies in the show for spectators and media representatives. We can never offer enough attractive model aircraft demonstrations for the public.

Required: Information, Motivation, and Training

Unlike more technically oriented classes, which can be introduced easily, freestyle classes require a longer introductory and development phase. In the aerobatics community today, the term “freestyle” encompasses a wide variety of different concepts. For this reason, it is essential to work with representatives of the various “philosophies” to find as common a path as possible.

Procedure

1. What freestyle concepts do we want to pursue? Joint clarification of terms or adoption of existing regulations.
2. Conducting a workshop for pilots and judges (fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters). Judges will be invited through the regional chief judges.
3. Organization of the 2nd Swiss Freestyle Event from October 11 or possibly October 18 in Pfäffikon, ZH.
