9th RC Aerobatics World Championship, 1975
Initially, there was talk of holding the 8th F3A World Championships in the Zurich area. The initiative came from the board of the Region 5 Model Aircraft Association.
At the time, the MFK had welcomed the idea and the initiative, but reportedly did not want to “offend the Italians with a competing bid.” In addition, it was said that time had become quite tight for a bid (in fact, it was not much later then than it is today). Nevertheless, the process of evaluating various airfields that would be suitable for this event began. The Zurich Section and Region 5 sought to secure the Lachen and Schänis airfields, while Mr. Wirz from the Aero Club’s Central Secretariat promised to explore the possibilities of the Dübendorf airfield (the venue for the 1st F3A World Championship in 1960). The Dübendorf military airfield, it was undisputed, would in any case be the optimal solution. However, since 1960, not only have directors, editors, and central secretaries at the AeCS changed frequently, but the administration of the military airfields also no longer seems to have the same relationship with model aviation as was the case “in the past.”
At the same time, Region 5, on the advice of Hannes Steiger, section president, contacted the Bern Model Flyers, particularly their regional chairman, Edwin Wellenzohn. The Bern-Belpmoos airfield, Steiger suggested, would be very well suited. With great dedication and initiative, Edwin Wellenzohn then began negotiations with the relevant authorities in parallel with our own efforts. In the Zurich region, the Lachen airfield increasingly emerged as the leading candidate, and we received excellent support and guidance from Franz Meier-Patton, who maintains friendly relations with the local flying group. The approval from the flight group outside of Schwyz was secured, for which we would like to express our special thanks once again today. Although the conditions in Lachen were excellent in many respects, to be objective, it must be said that Bern-Belpmoos Airport naturally offers considerably more due to its size and existing facilities. This may well have been a contributing factor in the MFK’s decision to choose Bern in the spring of 1974. Although no official approval has yet been received from the Civil Aviation Authority (don’t get too excited…), the MFK and the AeCS are to be congratulated on this decision. Not only has the airfield manager shown a high degree of enthusiasm and idealism for this World Championship from the very beginning, but also—as far as the airfield itself, the surrounding countryside, and, not least, the city of Bern are concerned—where participants and fans from all over the world will be staying.
