Indoor Flying in Goldau

The Arth Model Airfield Interest Group (IGMA) has already issued invitations to the 18th Indoor Flying Event. This indoor gathering remains very popular among pilots, and its success with spectators continues unabated, as the folks at IGMA are always coming up with something new.

Whether it’s a speed competition, a fun model like the Mario Kart—which participants fly together in a swarm—or very light, slow models that glide silently through the hall, the secret to the club’s long-standing success may lie in its offerings, which are designed specifically for families. In a workshop, participants build simple model airplanes under guidance, which are then immediately tested in the afternoon during the “Which Model Flies the Farthest?” competition. A highlight is the room with two flight simulators, which were built by IGMA members themselves. The F/A-18 simulator is equipped with a helmet that responds to the pilot’s head movements; in the 3D simulator, pilots look through Oculus Rift 3D goggles that virtually project the scenery and flight attitudes.

Under the theme “Steam,” Martin Horath, a steam locomotive engineer from Goldau, exhibited various models from his steam collection. There was plenty of variety on display.
