The Pfiffikus Studio in Marbach is taking flight again

This year, five students who are interested in aviation have once again come together. To get started with the topic, they visited the “real” airplanes and helicopters at the Aviation Museum in Altenrhein.

Fortunately, there’s a model aircraft club in Marbach. Ms. Horber had already inquired there about hosting the first “Clever Flyers” event. So everyone met up once again at the model aircraft field. Now the group could marvel at a wide variety of models, such as high-wingers, gliders, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. Daniel Hofmann explained the various control surfaces (elevator, ailerons, rudder) and flaps on the planes. He highlighted the similarities and differences between model planes and real aircraft. There were questions about the specifics of model building, such as the center of gravity of models. After all, everyone in the group will be building a small model of their own soon and, of course, hopes that it will actually fly. Robert Brassel then explained the key aspects of thermals, including “warm” and “cold” air currents as well as updrafts and downdrafts. Next, the group took a closer look at the axes and the function of the control surfaces during flight using a helicopter. Of course, flying the models was also a highlight. Daniel Hofmann used his Bell 47 to demonstrate various flight maneuvers from the maneuver catalog, some of which are flown at the Swiss Heli Semiscale Championship. Now it’s time for the “Smart 5” to start building their model and carrying out their own project on this topic, which they will then present to their classmates.
