SMV at the Model Aircraft Days at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne

At the Model Aircraft Days, held for the second time on October 9–10 at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, the SMV’s Youth Development Department was represented alongside the MG Lucerne. A booth was set up in the flight hall where children could build various Depron models; the flight demonstrations were scheduled to take place in front of the hall. Unfortunately, due to renovation work at the Swiss Museum of Transport, the flight demonstrations could only be held in a very small area.

For safety reasons—both for pilots and spectators—this popular attraction unfortunately had to be canceled at the last minute. Unfortunately, this could not be announced earlier; as a result, MG Lucerne and the SMV faced some harsh criticism on site. However, safety takes absolute priority, and after a thorough explanation, most people came to understand the reasoning behind this decision. It took a great deal of courage to make this decision; we would like to take this opportunity to once again express our sincere gratitude to the organizers.

On both days, building and then test-flying the Depron gliders proved extremely popular. More than 400 children took part in the activity and, with meticulous care and artistic creativity, created beautiful models, which were then launched to the applause of those present

Visitors were thoroughly tested. The Youth Development Department is currently evaluating two Depron models designed by Remo Kalberer and later via the

SMV, similar to the well-known Inca glider, can be purchased for such events. The advantage of these Depron models—especially for such events—lies in their simple and quick construction without the need for many tools, as well as the immediate sense of accomplishment they provide for the children. There are no limits to the “artistic” design of the models, although it must be said that some pilots certainly have certain scale-model ambitions.

The best models were awarded prizes, and the winners were delighted to receive some very nice prizes.

The 2010 Model Flying Days were once again a complete success. We’re looking forward to the 2011 Model Flying Days—hopefully with more space to fly.
