Just eight kilometers east of the city of Lelystad lies the Nationaal Luchtvaart-Themapark Aviodrome, located directly on the grounds of Lelystad Airport, which is still in operation today. As soon as you enter the grounds, it becomes clear: This museum is far more than a traditional exhibition—it is a vibrant interactive center dedicated to Dutch aviation and space exploration.

A Queen of Heaven You Can Touch

The Aviodrome’s most striking attraction is a KLM Boeing 747-206B, faithfully restored to its original condition. Visitors are allowed to explore the entire aircraft—from the cockpit to the cargo hold. The rear cabin area, where parts of the interior paneling have been removed, is particularly impressive. This gives visitors a fascinating glimpse into the structure, wiring, and mechanics of the jumbo jet, whose true dimensions can only be fully appreciated without the wall paneling.

Fokker: A Dutch Chapter in Aviation History

One of the museum’s main focuses is the development of Dutch aviation, particularly the history of the legendary Fokker aircraft factory (1912–1996). Models and original aircraft illustrate the manufacturer’s significance—from the famous Fokker Dr. I triplane, known as the “Red Baron’s” plane, to the successful Fokker F27 Friendship, which served in passenger service for decades, particularly in developing countries.

On the outdoor grounds, a Fokker F100 in KLM livery also awaits visitors—the last model Fokker built before the company closed its doors in 1996.

A Glimpse into Space

Space exploration also has a prominent place at the Aviodrome. To this day, Dutch industry plays a remarkable role in European space technology, and a separate exhibition on the upper level of the entrance hall is dedicated to this significant contribution.

The atmosphere of a historic airport

The museum impresses with its meticulous attention to detail. A replica of a terminal from the historic Schiphol Airport and an authentic World War II-era barracks with a bar give visitors the feeling of being at an airport from a bygone era. Numerous interactive exhibits, simulators, and video stations make the museum especially family-friendly.

For children, there’s a small “airfield” where they can play with mini-airplanes on wheels—a major attraction for young visitors.

Behind the Scenes: Restoration with Passion

Another highlight is the open restoration hangar. Former KLM and Fokker employees work there with visible dedication to restore historic aircraft to their original condition. Tools, components, ladders, and the characteristic smell of hydraulic oil give this area the authentic atmosphere of an active aviation facility.

Special Exhibition “Faster than Sound”

In the interactive exhibition “Faster than Sound,” none other than Sir Frank Whittle—through multimedia installations—guides visitors through the development of the first British jet engine. In three themed rooms, visitors experience the milestones that marked the transition from the propeller era to the jet age.

A museum for enthusiasts and families

The Aviodrome is well-maintained, diverse, and full of fascinating exhibits. It’s not only ideal for aviation enthusiasts, but also for school groups, other groups, and families. Rarely does a museum strike such a convincing balance between in-depth historical education and playful interactivity as this one does.
